We stayed in Marble Canyon campground on Thursday night, the sun lighting up the shoulder of Vermilion peak and all the burned up trees.
Starting up on Friday morning, beautiful morning light along Haffner creek.
The 'trail' (there is no trail..) normally goes along the top of the canyon wall on the left and follows the creek in. We decided to stay low.
Jamie's still fresh and all smiles as we start out on our adventure.
The group in the canyon. We were taking turns crossing the creek on some logs.. practice for all the logs to come.
Leon crossing the creek. The logs were chained down to the rocks on each end and we were optimistic that the permanent structure ment we were on the right track.
As we went up the creek, the canyon got too narrow and we'd have to bail.. after crossing the creek again. This was the second time we'd taken off our shoes to cross the creek, slowing us down a bit.
To escape the creek, we had to ascend this loose rocky slope.
In the forest above the creek the trees were dense.
Small open spaces would appear in the trees sometimes. This clearing had a Leon in it.
After getting past the canyon, we start to make our way back to the creek level.. look at all the logs everywhere.
Leon trying to stay above the mess.
Back at the creek, looking up the valley.
Jamie still smiling. It's still early though, we're roughly two hours into it.
Crossing the creek on logs is fun :)
There was still a mass of snow over the creek at the base of an avalanche gully. It made for an easy traverse.. sadly it was short lived.
Conor making his way along the creek. deadfall everywhere.
Leon vs. the tangled mess
Balance is key.
A little ways up from the creek, but there is no escape from the terrain.
Nearer the end of the valley fireweed has taken hold. There's still logs on the ground to watch out for. At least the fireweed is only waist high.
