Conor in the trees. The route starts out on the Sawmill snowshoe trails. The trees got a little tight but nothing too bad. It was a good warm up for the slopes ahead.
Conor and Jeremy taking a breather on the sawmill trails.
Jeremy makes his way up the ridgeline. We'd just left the tree line and had broken out into the open and the views were amazing. A bit of slate here but the slope on the north outlier would soften up to grass and snow.
Conor and Jeremy take in some of the views. The parking lot / trail head is the white patch in the lower right section of the photo. It's looking like it's going to be a beautiful day.
"That was quick. Here we are ascending to the first high point on the ridge.. We'll be at the col in no time.." "oh wait.." "There's another bump to ascend.. then another, then another.." Alison and Scott are reviewing the route from high up on the slope.
Up and up.. not too steep yet. Later we'll be ascending the slope that's seen in the background on the right there in order to find the summit.
Another bump along the north outlier ridge.. Mt Chester is poking up in the background above Conor. I'd hiked that two days ago, it looks pretty steep.
Looking back at Natasha as she looks out over the cornice'd ridge line.
"Is that the last one ?" There were a few bumps to ascend before we finally got to the end of the ridge and the top of the north outlier above the col..
Alison on one of the many false summits of the north outlier. There must have been five of them before we finally got to the end of the ridge.
Scott joining Conor and Alison on the summit of the north outlier. We paused here and tried to determine how we were going to get down to the col. Mt Inflexible is behind. The slope on the right ascends to the summit of Kent ridge and is our goal.
While on the hike I assumed that this hanging valley was the approach to Mt James Walker but as it turns out, it isn't. I still love the valley and the form of the mountain though.. This is a pano of four shots to try and get the whole view in.
Scott on the north outlier of Kent ridge.
Natasha, Alison, Jeremy, Scott and Conor on top of the north outlier - a sub peak of Kent ridge. The next step will be to get down from here and onto the col so we can start climbing up the the summit of Kent Ridge.
Closer look at Conor descending the north outlier of Kent ridge. I love the light here..
Wider view of Conor hiking down from the end of the outlier. Mt Birdwood is the tall peak in the background.
We weren't sure how to get off the top of the north outlier (upper right).. skiers left of the top led to some cliff bands, skiers right led to steep grassy slopes on the front face. Here Natasha leads the way and makes steps in the snow. She'll switch back towards the camera from where she is in this photo towards the col.
A crowd gathered to see if Natasha was going to be successful in finding a way off the outlier and down to the col. She made a path in the snow and one by one we cautiously followed her trail.
Scott on the very end of the north outlier ridge with the summit of Kent ridge (and our destination) behind him.
