Followed Lakeview Ridge trail to the summit then followed ridges to the summit of Mt Rogan / DungarvanSE2. On descent took a shoulder into the valley to regain the hiking trail. 18kms, 1560m elevation, 10.5 hours
It has snowed overnight and visibility was very low. We start our adventure heading into the bleak looking countryside.
The snow made the surrounding landscape look like a winter wonderland.
Trail sign, early on. I don't know if we were going on the Horseshoe Basin Loop Trail or not, We were hiking at Andrews discretion.. He did mention the trip would be about 20k.
Along the trail, the snow was thick.
Lively conversation ensued.
There were spots where the snow had drifted and we had to employ Scott to break trail for us. One of his self-proclaimed specialties ;)
Deep.
Leon bringing up the rear. Poles would turn out to be handy this day.
As we followed the flatland trail the clouds started to break. The light was beautiful.. We were looking for the base of a ridge to ascend.
To get from the trail to the ridge it was necessary to bush whack through snow covered trees. Luckly this section didn't last too long. Leon is leading the way here.
Starting up! We'd come from the upper left side of the frame. Our spirits were high as we made our way up the ridge.
Ascending near a rocky outcrop. We were the most colourful things around.
The snow made it both easier and harder to hike up the hill.. if that makes sense.
Nearing the top of the first ridge, Andrew climbs a small pinnacle. We all took pictures.
Off frame to the right, there was a break in the clouds and we could see distant mountain tops. We were getting pretty excited at the prospect of improved weather.
Scott on the outcrop. We can see across the valley and the top of Mt. Galwey
Higher on the ridge the sun started to break out. It was truly spectacular.
Leon on Lake view ridge looking across the valley at Mt Rogan / DungarvanSe2 which was our objective.
